Words of Wisdom

'Use every letter you write, every conversation you have, every meeting you attend to express your fundamental beliefs and dreams. Affirm to others the vision of the world YOU want. You are a free, immensely powerful source of life & goodness. Affirm It! Spread It! Radiate It! Think about it day and night and you will see a miracle happen - the greatness of your own life!'    Anonymous

Petition your council
We have a brand new site! Small but useful, PetitionYourCouncil helps you find out whether your local council has an online petitions site, and takes you there if it does.

Petitions are an age-old way for people to tell governments what they think, and we wanted to help more citizens to realise that they have the power to submit petitions to their councils via the internet. Check it out!

See into the future
Previously, you could only use our parliamentary site TheyWorkForYou to see things that have already happened. But it’s pretty obvious that you can’t change things in the past.

We’ve now added upcoming business, so you’ll always know when something’s going to happen in Parliament that matters to you.

Hint: To get sent alerts as soon as we know about an event you’d be interested in, just visit the new page, type in a word or phrase that you’d like to be alerted about in future in the “Search upcoming business” box, and click go. Once the results page arrives, click “Subscribe”.

Fixing up FixMyStreet
Meanwhile, FixMyStreet has introduced user accounts. So now you can:
» Report problems and leave updates without having to confirm by email
» View all the reports and updates that you have made
» See a summary map of your reports

We also have shiny new zoomable maps, something that we know many of you have been asking for, and we hope this will make problem reporting in rural or unfamiliar areas much easier. We’ll be blogging more details about all this soon.

We've been working on the railroad
OK, not technically on the railroad itself, but we have been working on our biggest new project for two years - FixMyTransport - and it’s nearly ready to launch.

It’s going to be all about helping people to get public transport problems fixed, but before it launches we need some help from you, the lovely people in our community of users and supporters.

We need two kinds of help in particular. First, we need your help collecting contact details for the nation’s transport companies, and second we need people with actual transport issues to report them through the site as beta testers in a couple of weeks’ time - drop us a line at team@fixmytransport.com if you’d like to be one of the first to try the site out.

Freedom, now 14% off
Our Freedom of Information website WhatDoTheyKnow is now used by people like you to make over 14% of all the FOI requests that get sent to central government departments in the UK. To see why this makes us happy, and why it’s a good thing, read this blog post.

And finally
» Next pub meet: The Counting House in London 7.30pm, 20/7/2011 - all welcome!
» Want us to contract for you? Drop a mail to hello@mySociety.org
» Last: Want to know much more about our sites? Check these new reports.
mySociety is a project of UK Citizens Online Democracy (UKCOD).
UKCOD is a registered charity in England and Wales, no. 1076346.

Enterprising People

Sam Garton graduated from Derby University in 2005 with a BA Hons in illustration. He now spends pretty much every spare minute he has on illustration of one type or another. His current obsession is with otters, and in particular one little character he's been working on for a while..

Otter is an innocent little thing who lives with Otter Keeper, and Teddy (her loyal companion who more often than not takes the blame when things go wrong). The stories are aimed at children and adults alike. Otter's world is a confusing little place for her, and while children will empathise with some of her naivety, adults can chuckle along with Otter Keeper's frustrations at her simplistic views on life.

To find out more about Otter, and follow her stories make sure you visit
www.iamotter.co.uk.  These works are created from original pen and pencil drawings, coloured using a mixture of traditional watercolours and digital techniques."

The 'Rag Bag' recycling scheme has been developed to provide regular fundraising for schools, clubs, nurseries and various organisations UK Wide.  The scheme increases awareness about textile recycling and by increasing recycling rates we can help the environment by ensuring less material goes to landfill.  The scheme is completely FREE, and your school, club or organisation will be paid for every kg recycled. You can raise hundreds of pounds with every collection made!

Gas and electricity companies
rip us off

They get away with it because they sell something we all need - and they’re too big for each individual customer to take on. But can you imagine if thousands of us, their customers, signed up to switch our gas and electricity companies as one group? If we all join together, we will have enough bargaining power to demand a cheaper price... more
